On Saturday, September 21, 2024, ActionAid International Kenya (AAIK) hosted the inaugural Big Me Career Learning Fair at the Kasarani Sports Complex, drawing over 1,000 children and their parents. The event aimed to ignite children’s career aspirations, guiding them to envision their futures through hands-on career exploration and creating personal vision boards.
Children, dressed in school uniforms, home clothes, or outfits reflecting their future professions, interacted with professionals across various fields. From aviators and doctors to IT experts and models, the learners gained valuable insights about the skills, education pathways, and daily realities of diverse careers.
One learner from Jabali Christian Schools expressed her enthusiasm, saying:
“I enjoyed the Big Me Career Learning Fair. Speaking with over 20 professionals expanded my imagination and clarified my ideas. I even discovered that some professionals pursue multiple passions, like an accountant-cum-model and a teacher who is also an artist. I can’t wait to come back next year!”
Another learner from Kathonzweni reflected on how the event broadened his career horizons:
“I had never heard of fields like travel and tours, IT, water engineering, or modeling. Thanks to this event, I’ve added many new options to my vision board and will keep researching them.”
AAIK’s Executive Director, Susan Otieno, commended parents for supporting their children’s early career exploration:
“We’re inspired by parents who have embraced this journey with their children. This is just the beginning, and we look forward to an even bigger event next year. We want these children to find direction early so they can transform society for the better.”
The event was made possible through partnerships with organizations such as Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital, Davis & Shirtliff, Kenya Police Service, and SkyCraft Aviators, among others. Educational institutions like Regis Runda Academy, Jabali Christian Schools, and Loreto Convent Msongari also participated in mentoring children.
AAIK appreciates media partner The Standard Group for amplifying the impact of this initiative through its flagship platforms. This event marks a significant milestone in helping children discover their potential and fostering a generation ready to shape the future.
